The art and athletic scholarships at Steven’s High School (Southridge) were no-brainers. It is imperative that athletes who are as successful as Steven has been remember the path that brought them the success they enjoy.  Creating scholarships set an example and also encourage hard work and scholastic achievement.  The recipients are chosen based on grade point average, talent, and need.

Team Jenny is a charity in the Boston, Massachusetts area set up to raise money for Cystic Fibrosis research.  Jenny Smith has the disease and her parents have established the charity in her name.

Jerry Hanlon was Steven’s offensive line coach at the University of Michigan. When coach Hanlon retired, a scholarship was established in his name at the university.  It was a perfect fit for giving back to the university that gave Steve the opportunity to earn his degree and play football at such a prestigious level.

This was our first venture into the performing arts.  We helped produce a play at Theatre Charlotte.  The Boys Next Door is a play about four young boys with different handicaps living together in a group home.  It is a wonderful presentation of how the young men function and survive on a day to day basis… and how they interact with the ‘real world’.  We are proud to have helped make the play a success and were very encouraged at how well it was received.

For seven years, Steven was the spokesperson for the Sandusky, Ohio United Way campaign.  In 1999 he was joined by Orlando Pace of the St. Louis Rams. The theme of the campaign was Michigan versus Ohio State.  It was a great success and helped raise a record amount of money for the charity.

The Tosco Music Party is a musical celebration featuring singers and instrumentalists from a broad genre.  Kids playing classical violin are on the same program with a gospel choir and a bluegrass band.  Folk and alternative music are as likely as country and pop.  It is a wonderful way for those with a passion for music of all types to come together and enjoy an evening.

Bernie Kosar’s Charity Golf Tournament is an annual event that raises money by pairing ‘celebrities’ with fans.  Steve’s popularity in the Cleveland area serves the tournament well and he has enjoyed participating for several years now.

Steve was involved in painting murals on children’s hospital walls and summer football camps and working with disabled kids in the off seasons for almost 12 years.

~

Since his high school days, Steve has been involved in Special Olympics.  His senior high school project for the Silver Knight award in art involved working with the kids in the Miami Special Olympics program.

~

During his tenure with the Browns, Steve brought the kids from a Diabetes summer camp to the Brown’s stadium for a night practice.  This was especially meaningful as his cousin, Kevin Rossetti, was one of the camp attendees.  Everyone had a great evening and the kids were allowed on the sidelines while Steve and other players signed autographs.

Steven’s mom, Barbara, teaches at Butler High School in Matthews, North Carolina.  It seemed appropriate that the Foundation should become involved with the art and athletic departments at Butler.  Besides the two annual scholarships, the Foundation also helps with other causes at the school.  Contributing to the annual wish box during the holiday season and sponsorship of the school’s literary magazine along with paying for an occasional pre-game meal are simple thing's we do within the community The Butler High School student volunteers have been invaluable in preparing Art Boxes for delivery.

Each year Steve has participated in Jim Harbaugh’s charity golf tournament.  The connection to kids and University of Michigan and sports is a natural for the Foundation to continue to support.

The city of Matthews holds a nationally recognized annual art festival.  Within that festival, Charlotte, NC area high school Seniors are encouraged to enter their artwork to compete for cash scholarships and other awards.  In 2001 and 2002, we sponsored of the Matthews Art Fest ~ High School Senior Scholarships. We continue to co-sponsor this important venue by providing the set-up and breakdown and judging of the student artwork.

The Open Door Art Studio in St. Louis MO. is a wonderful agency that makes the arts accessible to adults and children living with mental illness in all it’s forms by creating a sustainable art space that promotes recovery and self-esteem through expression and acceptance in a non-clinical setting.
